There is a great deal of propaganda being espoused by the local organizations and members of the Kasich Administration regarding the water quality of the Grand Lake St. Marys. How many of you have recently heard the following statements?
"The water coming into the lake is cleaner and the lake is cleaner."
"It took years for the lake to get into this condition and it will take years to clean it up."
If this is true, then why did the toxins levels measured in June had at one site measured 102.8 parts per billion. The World Health Organization's standard is 20ppb. The toxin levels in the Grand Lake St. Marys is 4-5 times higher than the WHO''s standard.
Here is the thing about this, local businesses are really hurting due to the polluted lake. Ask any business around the lake and services relating to the lake and they will tell you that their receipts are down approximately 50% for the past few years. Home values have dropped 14% annually.
The question is what scientific data are these people using that says the lake is cleaner because the water is cleaner?
While home sales is the area has been much lower than before the algae bloom of 2010, the % of home sales by cash purchases are up. Why is that happening? Well, one thing contributing to this is a hit or miss regarding Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans. People in the area have been denied loans due to the polluted lake. So the interest rates at these two sources of loans have good rates in the range of 3.18% - if you can get one, so cash sales is the alternative.
